The eyes of Laura Mars is one of those edgy, stylish thrillers that they excelled at in the late 70s (Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, the Stepford Wives). Faye Dunaway (at her peak) plays a fashion photogapher who has visions of violent murder. \Its a great premise - we see girls in underwear discoing at fashion shoots, a mock-car crash scene with fur-clad models pulling each others’ hair, then grisly eyestabbing scenes and screechy, someones-going-to-die music. And of course, the New York high-fashion world of the seventies comes across as an amazingly exotic, (and/or grimy) place today, giving it a whole new level of enjoyment.
And the mystery-suspense element wraps up pretty nicely at the end. With a kick-ass Barbra Stresiand themesong, and an almost-unbelievably young Tommy Lee Jones, too (thewere both was so much cooler then…as were New York, and fashion, by the look of it…)
