Art on the walls

29 04 2008

One of those little things I have always appreciated about Tokyo is the public art they use on construction sites- whereas in other countries those faceless, flimsy white walls are used to block off buildings-in-progress, here they use barriers that are colorfully painted and often quite attractive.

Indeed, the vertical strips of lawn and tumbling ferns that turned the Omotesando Hills construction site into a temporary Hanging Gardens were much more attractive than the finished thing!

These are some interesting pop-folk-art pieces, currently gracing the redevelopment of Shinjuku’s old Marui store right opposite Isetan in the heart of the shopping district. (I actually posted some pics earlier on my cellphone but I was in the area the other day with a quality camera and thought I’d try again).

Funnily enough, Im not the only one to appreciate all this: Pingmag currently have a photoessay on the same topic with some more examples from around town (several of which have already appeared on this blog)…
