Weekend roundup: Singapore Idol, Desperate housewives, Spacemen, giant floating skulls, a nice afternoon in the country

5 10 2008

Melbourne was buzzing this weekend, with glorious golden weather, lots going on about town, and clocks wound forward an hour to herald the official start of Daylight Saving; the Summer time change which means long, lazy afternoons with the sun setting around 8.30 at night.

First up, I went to my friend Dave’s house to catch up on Desperate Housewives, and get a quick and experimental new haircut – short at the sides witha Tintin-like curl on top. I think I kind of like it.

The next day was off to the Myer Music Bowl, (an outdoor amphitheatre(, for “Singapore Day” ; an event sponsored by the Singaporean government aimed at renewing ties among Singaporean emigres with their homecountry. The event travels around the world to a different city ech year with a large Singapore expat population (last year was New York), and no expense is spared; free entry, free food, showbags and a live concert by the winner of Singapore Idol!! Of course you were supposed to be Singaporean to get in, but my friend had a “plus 1″ so I got through as well. There were probably about 10 t o15 thousand (Singaporean) people there.

Then it was down to Birrarung Marr, the stylishly designed new park by the Yarra River where the “Dream Festival” was taking place; a vaguely themed celebration of “Australians and their dreams”, as expressed by an army of 3D white “dreamers” standing in formation under a ferris wheel, and a cavalcade of huge, floating sculptures moored on the river. Gloomy atonal music clanged and boomed incongrously in the brilliant sunshine, and streams of people wandered about, enjoying the display. What did it all mean? I’m not sure, but it was quite beautiful.

Bet she is wishing she didn’t wear that coat!

There was also this reverse-bungee-trampoline ride!

On Sunday I took a drive with with other friends out to the countrty, to visit Kyneton and look around before I relocate. It was beautiful  -wide open blue skies, still green hills, sleepy streets and a nice little pizza restaurant. A good weekend!
