Japan: Cute Cult

27 11 2013

Cibo Matto were a band that I loved as a teenager in the 1990s. They were two Japanese girls who hung out with the Beatie Boys, Yokyo Ono and Caetano Veloso and produced sweet pop songs about food, sung in a heavy Japanese accent, to jazzy instrumentals and hip hop beats.

They were wonderful. After two cultish albums, they disbanded to work on solo projects  – but now they are back. There is a new album, Hotel Valentine, on its way next year and this suitably odd promo video appeared online this week to publicise it…although judging from the music which sneaks into the last minute, they still have the knack!
