What did you eat yesterday?

The latest discovery in my forays into the (wonderful) world of manga:

“What did you eat yesterday?” is a comic book about a forty-something gay couple and (I’m not kidding here) their daily menu-planning. It is half scenes of domestic gay life with short rambling reminiscences about coming out or having a crush on the straight guy at college. But this is interspersed seamlessly with step-by-step instructions on how to make your own homemade strawberry jam from scratch and slightly naggy money-saving tips for grocery shopping. Amazing.

It has been quietly blowing my mind. Although the right-to-left order of the dialogue takes some getting used to (for some reason they haven’t mirror-reversed the images as they often do for translated-from-Japanese comics.)

Still it is strangely compelling and pretty addictive. And so, so Japanese. You can read a very informative commentary on the comic here.
