The lesbian mermaids of Buddhaisawan

4 04 2016

I always try to make time for the National Museum when I am back in Bangkok ( see here and here,) as much for the atmosphere of the old palace courtyards in which it is housed as the art. This time though I came to see the newly-opened hall of Buddha images, with thousand year old Lopburi stone carvings presented in a darkened room, spotlit to create dramatic shadows.

I also stopped by the Buddhaisawan chapel, its high ceiling covered with murals of the Ramakien, and finally caught a glimpse of one small detail I had been trying to find for years – the lesbian mermaids frolicking in the sea of one of the Heavens.

They can be found on the third panel to the left as you enter.
