The Good Life

11 04 2016

O Veg is my new favourite restaurant. A repurposed country shack hidden down a laneway in rural Yuen Long, it serves organic and vegetarian food. We arrived just as darkness was falling (having gotten lost on the way, fairly standard procedure) and stumbled into through the gates to find a tribe of boisterous tortoiseshell kittens tumbling around in a dusty yard, a deafening chorus of crickets and frogs in ditches in the neighbouring fields and a lone firefly flickering.

Inside, Latin music was playing on an old stereo above a shelf of dusty books and we sat Thai style on an raised platform for a leisurely slow-food meal of durian salad, deliciously roasted vegetables and pandan pudding, made from the produce of the property’s farm. It felt like a mini-holiday, far far away from the Hong Kong I know.

I can’t wait to go back.
