Summer soundz, with Blood Orange..

2 07 2016

New album “Freetown Sound” is brimming with the sounds of a sultry New York summer. It is a collage of low-fi funk, snatches of sweet melody and crackling street sounds, blasts of rap and jazz, yearning vocals and guest spots from Debbie Harrie, Carly Rae Jepson and Nelly Furtado. All this, plus references to transgender doc Paris Is Burning (again), African-American author Ta-Nehisi Coates, 1920s South African self-proclaimed prophetess Nontetha Nkwenkwe (who was persecuted by white authorities and locked up in a mental institution), and fourth century philosopher St Augustine. Its a sweet haze of a record,  lovely in its meditations on blackness, immigration, feminism and religion with an odd, off-kilter queer sensibility running seamless through it all, despite coming from a (charming) straight man.
