The new Aga Khan Museum of Islamic Art in (strangely enough) Toronto is hosting an exhibition on “animals in Islam” including beautiful Arabic and Persian calligraphy and fantastic creatures like Al-Buraq, above, the winged steed that flew Mohammed to the Seven Heavens in the Quran and is often portrayed in Persian (and here, Pakistani) art as having a human face (apparently due to a mistranslation in the Quran from the Arabic original.)
