One of the city’s most unique old buildings is the 1933 complex, named after the year in which it was built to house the city’s slaughterhouse. This brutalist concrete structure was described by one friend as “looking like something which had been designed for another species – which of course it was.” It is crisscrossed by ramps designed for cattle to create a biazrre Escher effect in what is now a striking upscale mall.
