One of the happy surprises of this trip was the discovery of Chinese Muslim food, with its crispy flatbreads and tasty beef noodle soups. Its great. My friend was staying near the beautiful main mosque in Hangzhou, with a cluster of attendant halal eateries around the corner, and we ended up eating more on the Champs Elysee of Tianducheng, and then again at a little place opposite one of the gay bars in Shanghai. Indeed I was surprised to find Muslim restaurants ubiquitous in the city, which even hosts a Friday Muslim market, catering both to the Uighur people of Xinjiang and the Hui, who are ethnically the same as the Han Chinese.
