From its black swans to the colourful and noisy rainbow lorikeets that roost at my local train station every night, the continent’s birdlife has always captured the colonial, and Australian, imagination. A current exhibition at the suburban Mornington art gallery explores the theme of birds in Australian art with “Shenae & Jade” (above) by Petrina Hicks and Sydney Long’s 1914 “Spirit of the Plains” to which I add my own piece below, a photograph of a riverside post in Kyneton which has been adorned with the fallen feathers of a flock of local cockatoos.
