Teutonic flair

Nothing speaks more to Bangkok’s open-mindeness than its latest culinary crush, haute German cuisine diner, Suhring. Yes, you read that right. In a city home to one of the world’s finest, and fieriest, cuisines, German food is the latest “in” thing. And franky, the restaurant does not disappoint. The meal we ate there was perhaps the best we had in the city: surprising, hearty yet delicate and recognisably German dishes served up with an interesting wine selection in a sprawling Sathorn villa surrounded by tropical greenery.

Trashed: Bangkok Trasher

31 01 2011

“Trasher” is the every-once-in-a-while party for Bangkok’s Thai/Western/gay/ straight ‘cool crowd’ . It provides an alternative to the drag shows and pop hit dance remixes of the Silom bars with… well pop hits, and a drag show. And: superheroes! At least that was the theme for the latest edition, and gratifyingly, most of the crowd rose to the challenge with costumes.

It was a very friendly, slightly-indie leaning and ‘up for it’ crowd, which made for a great night. I had been looking forward to visiting the party at its old location, Club Culture, a semi-derelict sounding alternative lifestyle hub in Banglamphu, but for this edition the event moved to RCA (Royal City Avenue),a slightly mindboggling strip of mainly Thai, mainly young-ish bars crowded along a stretch of road by a freeway, spilling out to cover almost the whole thoroughfare.
